Artist Statement

I love universal themes that have nature and animals as subject matter. Simple forms, vibrant color and texture animate my whimsical style. Even though education has played a big role in my career I have always been a producing artist and am prolific when it comes to the making of art. My home of almost 30 years, provides a lot of studio space for my artistic rambling.
It is in my nature to create art work using a variety of media. I am a painter with a masters in ceramics. My ceramic work explores functional and non-functional forms usually with an animal theme that incorporates a painted surface. If I had to choose just one media it would be watercolor. I love the sparkle of the white paper and the spontaneity of the flowing pigment, special effect techniques and the ease and availability of the medium makes it desirable.
I started painting murals about 20 years ago and have been brightening up people?s gardens, homes and businesses using latex house paint. It is rigorous to paint large using a big brush. going up and down ladders, sometimes inching along the ground like a caterpillar. There are a few unique aspects about mural painting that makes it an enjoyable experience. First it is sold before you begin, there is a great deal of problem solving working with your client, so the end result is a collaboration of sorts, and best of all you don't have to frame it! Clients love flowers and animals as subject matter brought to life in simple forms and vibrant color. Their space is transformed by the whimsy of it all.

As a third generation artist my world is filled with color texture, form and composition. My passion for universal themes was fueled by my studies abroad on Chapman's World Campus Afloat sailing around the world studying art, dance, architecture and religion in Africa and Asia. My bachelors degree began with 3 years at Montana State, graduating from ASU with a major in visual art and education. Later in life I earned a Masters in Studio Art with an Emphasis in Ceramics from NAU. My certifications range from kindergarten to college. Many years, 26 to be exact, were spent teaching visual art at Cactus Shadows CCUSD93 and serving as the department chair for the Arts.
Previous to my teaching career I had a gallery that promoted Montana artists and carried the soft sculpture line I designed and cottage manufactured. The line was marketed to boutiques, galleries and arts/craft fairs.
At this season in my life I have the joy of working in my studio and gardens. About 20 years ago I discovered I have a natural ability for painting decorative murals and paint about one a month, most of the locations are outdoors in beautiful settings on archways and fireplaces.
Too boring to list exhibits, competitions, collections and publications, that is on my robinrayart.com web site. I might be considered a folk artist with over 200 murals decorating the desert foothills area.
