Using traditional watercolor techniques, participants will learn how to paint the rocky landscape, desert plants and expansive skies of Arizona.  Working from provided reference images, or your own, learn to capture the essence of the Sonoran desert.  

The Sonoran Arts League is proud to offer a Veteran Art Program to our military community, both active and retired, including free art classes, workshops, and open studio time, bridging the United States Armed Forces and the arts community by bringing the arts and art education to veterans and military.

Free for Veterans and Active Duty Service Members.

About: The Sonoran Art Leagues annual three-dimensional only art show, “Off the Wall,” takes the works off the gallery walls and lets you see the beauty of three-dimensional works. 


All submissions are processed online, to submit scroll to the bottom of this page and click 'Register for this Event'. If you need assistance submitting your artwork to be juried, please contact the Sonoran Arts League office at 480-575-6624.     
 

Important Dates:
  • Application Deadline: August 25, 2021
  • Jury Date: August 27, 2021
  • Artist Notification Date: September 2, 2021
  • Drop Off Date: September 7, 2021
  • Install Date: September 7, 2021
  • Reception Date: September 10, 2021 4pm-7pm
  • Exhibition Run Dates: September 8 - October 3, 2021
  • Artwork Pickup: October 4, 2021

 
Accepted Artwork:  This exhibit is open to all three-dimensional art of all genres.
 

Call Fees:
  • $30 with 2 volunteer hours* for up to 5 pieces of work submitted (10 pieces for jewelers).
  • $80 with no volunteer hours for up to 5 pieces of work submitted (10 pieces for jewelers).
 *Volunteer hours must be completed in the 2021 calendar year with the Sonoran Arts League or be bought out at a rate of $25/hour.
 

Juror: David Bradley, professor of Art at Paradise Valley Community College since 2004; Department Head of Ceramics responsible for instructional design, course development, schedule development, supervision of adjunct faculty in ceramics. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from La. Tech University; Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from University of North Texas. He is the recipient of many national and local awards in recognition for his teaching including the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development recognition 2017 & 2018. He has served on the board of several arts organizations including Arizona Clay Association (president) eye lounge (president) and is currently the Director of Community Outreach and Veterans Arts Programs at Arizona Artists Guild. Along with Dr. Caron Sada he received a Horizon Grant from Maricopa Community Colleges for a collaboration between psychology and Art. Bradley is a member in good standing in the National Council on Education in Ceramic Arts, College Art Association.


Commission: The Sonoran Arts League retains a 25% commission on all exhibition sales.
 

Sales: The Sonoran Arts League will make payment of the sale price less the commission (25%) of all sold artwork directly to the artist. If work is purchased by credit card, credit card processing fees will be deducted from the payment to the artist. Checks will be available 10 days following the close of the show.
 
With the sale of work, the artist is encouraged to bring in new artwork as approved by the League office as replacement for the sold piece.
 

Display Requirements: Art must be in gallery ready condition and each piece must be well labeled.
  • Pieces with saw-tooth hangers will not accepted.
  • No filament fishing line is acceptable, all mounting systems must be strong enough to support the weight of the artwork.
  • For wall-mounted sculpture, if you require a system other than a standard picture hanger, the artist must provide the hanging system and must either mount the piece and/or supervise the hanging process.  
 
Selected Works: Artists selected for an exhibition will be given sufficient time to prepare their work and make drop off/delivery arrangements prior to the exhibit date. There is no maximum or minimum number of artists.
 
All work must be original, unsold work, & the artist must own the sole copyright to art.
 
Once your artwork is accepted there will be no substitutions and your work must remain in the Center for the Arts through the end of the show or until it sells.

Instructor: Kathleen Nelson

 

Come create a sun catcher to hand in your widow.  No glass cutting skills are required for this class but can be used if desired.  You will learn how to use pieces of glass to create bright designs then can then be hung in a window or on a wall. These also make wonderful gifts or can be used as ornament for trees.  Each student will make up to 6 sun catchers.

Class Fee: $55
Materials Fee: $10

Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate

Age Limit: Minimum age of 12. Ages 12-17 ok, but must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Grab some friends and join us in the Arts Learning Studio to make or glaze a bowl to be donated to the Empty Bowls Project. This event is led by an instructor and no experience is required. Free to participate and all materials will be provided.

A limited number of participant scholarships are available through the generous support of Kiwanis of Carefree.
 
Sonoran Arts League Youth Art Summer Camps offer the unique opportunity for the young artist to explore new mediums, experience different materials, and stretch the bounds of their creativity. Sessions will feature age-appropriate instruction and hands-on learning.
 
Summer Camp will feature a variety of mediums from ceramic painting, clay building, drawing, painting, and mixed media.

This workshop will allow participants to explore different methods of selecting color combinations using the color wheel. Topics will include the concepts of hue, value, and intensity. Participants will then go through a series of exercises to apply these principles and experiment with different color relationships.

Board members will work to continue to build strong partnerships and connections that benefit the Sonoran Arts League members and the surrounding community. 

The July 2021 Board of Directors Working Session will be held in lieu of a formal meeting, No agenda will be established and there will not be any formal motions entertained or votes taken. Reports on the status of the Sonoran Arts League will be presented for infomration-sharing only.

In this class the student will be creating their own uniquely designed plate. Using a selection of glass items (stringers, noodles,frits pebbles and premade kits) each student will create their own exciting design. This is your chance to have fun designing a one-of-a-kind plate.Some cutting skills may be learned. Plates will be 8 x 8" and will go through the kiln twice, once to fuse the elements together and once to slump into a plate mold.

This oil painting workshop is designed to guide students into the world of oil painting by clearly illustrating and explaining materials and a variety of painting techniques. You will not only learn how to paint with oils, but also how to prepare a palette, choose brushes, and mix colors.
