About: Showcasing endeavors in assemblage, mixed media paintings, collage, sculpture and all that you can imagine, “Varied Composition” hints at fun while being unique and visually compelling.

 

All submissions are processed online, to submit scroll to the bottom of this page and click 'Register for this Event'. If you need assistance submitting your artwork to be juried, please contact the Sonoran Arts League office at 480-575-6624.     
 

Important Dates:

Accepted Artwork: Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Glass, Fiber, Functional, Jewelry, Digital, Photography, Installation, Jewelry, Mixed Media, and New Genres. Proposals may include multiple disciplines.
 

Call Fees:
  • $30 with 2 volunteer hours* for up to 5 images submitted.
  • $80 with no volunteer hours for up to 5 images submitted.
 *Volunteer hours must be completed in the 2021 calendar year with the Sonoran Arts League or be bought out at a rate of $25/hour.
 

Commission: The Sonoran Arts League retains a 25% commission on all exhibition sales.
 

Sales: The Sonoran Arts League will make payment of the sale price less the commission (25%) of all sold artwork directly to the artist. If work is purchased by credit card, credit card processing fees will be deducted from the payment to the artist. Checks will be available 10 days following the close of the show.
 
With the sale of work, the artist is encouraged to bring in new artwork as approved by the League office as replacement for the sold piece.
 

Display Requirements: Art must be in gallery ready condition and each piece must be well labeled on the back or bottom.
  • Gallery Ready works include D-rings or screw eyes and wire for paintings.
  • Pieces with saw-tooth hangers will not accepted.
  • No filament fishing line is acceptable, all mounting systems must be strong enough to support the weight of the artwork.
  • For 2D artwork on canvases, artwork must be gallery wrapped or framed.  
  • For wall-mounted sculpture, if you require a system other than a standard picture hanger, the artist must provide the hanging system and must either mount the piece and/or supervise the hanging process.  
 

Selected Works: Artists selected for an exhibition will be given sufficient time to prepare their work and make drop off/delivery arrangements prior to the exhibit date. There is no maximum or minimum number of artists.
 
All work must be original, unsold work, & the artist must own the sole copyright to art.
 
Once your artwork is accepted there will be no substitutions and your work must remain in the Center for the Arts through the end of the show or until it sells.

The mission of the Hidden In The Hills Artist Studio Tour is to provide an opportunity for the public to visit the workspaces of dedicated artists in the Sonoran Foothills, to learn about the artist's methodology and process and to purchase directly from them in a friendly, engaging atmosphere that showcases quality art.

Reach
  • The Hidden in the Hills Artist Studio Tour includes approximately 50,000 studio visits and contributes to the sale of over $1,000,000 in art over 6 days.
  • 9,000 Hidden in the Hills Directories & 65,000 Maps are distributed by 175+ participating artists, at local area attractions and hotels, and the Sonoran Arts League - Center for the Arts (Studio One on the Hidden in the Hills Map).

The Sonoran Arts League is proud to offer members the opportunity and privilege to showcase their art, demonstrate how it is created, educate thousands of visitors, and sell their works during the 2021 Hidden in the Hills Artist Studio Tour.
 
The mission of the Hidden in the Hills Artist Studio Tour is to provide an opportunity for the public to visit the workspaces of dedicated artists in the Sonoran Foothills, to learn about the artists’ methodology, and process and to purchase directly from these artists in a friendly, engaging atmosphere that showcases quality art.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATION
  • Hidden in the Hills Artist Studio Tour is the oldest and largest Open Studio Tour in the Southwest and will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2021.
  • Exposure to the art-loving and art-buying community, 70% of whom attend Hidden in the Hills every year.
  • Artist listing in the Studio Map 45,000 copies published and distributed.
  • Listing and advertising opportunity (at a reduced rate) in the Artist Directory.
  • Opportunity to submit for the Hidden in the Hills Studio Map and Artist Directory cover artwork.
  • Web / social media presence on Sonoran Arts League channels.
  • Extensive public relations opportunities featuring participating artists.
  • Studio Maps and Artist Directory allotment for each participating artist.
  • Directional signage to help guide visitors to host studios.
  • Promotional asset toolkit with logos, photos, and suggested post language.


PARTICIPATION FEE 
  • A participation fee of $500 to be paid to the Sonoran Arts League upon registration.
  • Hidden in the Hills participants must complete 8 hours of volunteer service for the Sonoran Arts League, between January 1 and December 31, 2021. If the participant is unable or unwilling to complete their volunteer time, the hours may be paid for at a rate of $25 per hour to the Sonoran Arts League.
  • Partners doing collaborative work may pay one fee and will receive one listing in the Hidden in the Hills artist directory and website.
  • To accommodate for the uncertainly of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic participants may opt out of Hidden in the Hills 2021 and receive a refund of registration fees less a $50 administrative fee through July 23, 2021. No refunds of participation fees will be issued after that date.


GUEST ARTIST / HOST STUDIO MATCHING 
  • It is the responsibility of the guest artist to find a Host Studio.
  • A Host Studio / Guest Artist Match Up Day will be held (in person) on April 3, 2021 to help facilitate connection between artists and host studios.
  • Guest artists are required to be matched with a host studio prior to completing registration.


PERMITS & LICENSES
  • Applicable state and local licenses are required for Hidden in the Hills participation. All participating artists must provide copies to the Sonoran Arts League prior to the event date and display them during the event dates at your physical location.

Prickly Plants

Instructor: Linda Lindus


Free art workshop for students in grades 3-8.Starting with a painted canvas  (your choice of a sunset or a hot summer day) you'll have the opportunity to play with mixed media, up-cycling bottle caps and found items into a cactus. This class is an experiment in using found items to create art by mixing media and exploring the shapes and colors of desert plants.
 

This workshop is presented free to the community through the generous support of Kiwanis of Carefree.

Each month the Sonoran Arts League brings together its members to discuss upcoming events, current arts trends and news from the organization. League membership meetings are also key opportunities for members to network amongst each other, develop new relationships, and stay up to date on all things Sonoran Arts League. Each meeting features a live artist demo following the business portion of the meeting. 

The March 2021 Monthly Member Meeting will be hosted via Zoom.

Come create a sun catcher to hang in your widow. 

 

Instructor: Kathleen Nelson

 

Sun catchers placed in a window create beautiful colors to brighten your day.  No glass cutting skills are required for this class but can be used if desired.  You will learn how to use pieces of glass to create bright designs then can then be hung in a window or on a wall. These also make wonderful gifts or can be used as ornament for trees.  Each student will make up to 6 sun catchers


Class Fee: $55
Materials Fee: $10

Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate

Age Limit: Minimum age of 12. Ages 12-17 ok, but must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Join in the fun to create a pair of earrings or a necklace with an Earth Day Theme! Marlene Sabatina, of Feather Heart Studio will teach you how to create leaf shapes out
of Copper that will become earrings.  This is a beginner class and no experience is necessary.  All tools are provided for this class, however if you have a hammer with
a fine edge to it you can bring it with you. See you on Earth Day!

PLEASE NOTE: This class is held over two sessions one week apart. Part 1: May 4, 2021 & Part 2: May 11, 2021.  

Students in this two day class will complete two flowers.  The first day will be designing, cutting and arranging the glass to form a flower. The first week the flower pieces will be cut and arranged in preparation for fusing. Once this is done the flowers will be put in a kiln to fuse, then slumped into a mold that will create the flower shape (a total of 48 hours in the kiln).  The flower will then be drilled.  The second day of class the flower will be assembled to give it a stem and gold or silver paint can be added as an embellishment.  Flowers will be ready to take home at the end of the second week.  


Class Fee: $60
Materials Fee: $15

Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate

Age Limit: Minimum age of 12. Ages 12-17 ok, but must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Mixed Media Paper Collage

Instructor: Nancy Breiman


Free art workshop for students in grades 3-8.

Create your own 8” x 10” mixed media paper collage on a canvas board. You’ll have your choice of “Jumping in the Ocean” or “Going on Safari”. Bring your imagination and creativity and leave with your magical creation, ready to frame. In this workshop we'll use stickers, scrapbook paper, mulberry paper, and mod podge.  You’ll create a fun, layered finished painting by layering torn paper and images to create your imaginary world. All materials needed will be supplied.
 
There will be no sharp tools used. It is suggested you wear an apron or big t-shirt to protect clothes, although all the materials we’ll use are removable in the wash.
 

This workshop is presented free to the community through the generous support of Kiwanis of Carefree.
