Hugh Starkey was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington. Throughout his life Hugh has
worked developing his skills in creative drawing. It was, however, after moving to the Sun
Lakes, Arizona that he extended his drawing skills toward oil painting.
Hugh's paintings exhibit a characteristic realism influenced by both contemporary and classical
artists and his signature style reveals a sense of peace and beauty in the classical tradition. His
still life paintings tend to reflect traditional minimalist themes and his portraiture paintings reveal
his personal expression and provoke a sense of peace, stillness, or a contemplative mood
reminiscent of Johannes Vermeer's painting, GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING. Hugh was
significantly influenced by Master Artist Judith Durr. His ability to convey a sense of realism
was developed under her direction.
He is a member of the Sonoran Art League and has displayed his work at Fine Art Shows
including the Sonoran Arts League Exhibition, Southwestern Premier Artists Casa Grande Fine
Art Exhibition, the Arts by the Lake Association and on social media. Much of his work is in
private collections. You can visit Hugh at his studio/gallery in Sun Lakes, AZ.
