Artist Statement

There is something deeply gratifying to me in keeping the ancient technique of egg tempera alive. I enjoy explaining the process with those who view my work and are unfamiliar with the medium. Inevitably I'll hear "Really, you use the yolk?" Since detail is my passion, I'm delighted egg tempera and realism work absolutely perfectly together, as well as allowing for vibrant color in my pieces.
My first works were still life pieces requiring the time consuming process of choosing the articles, set up, lighting, photographing, and printing sections for layout. From there I started working with wildlife painting, so far using photos I've taken while out kayaking. I'm really looking forward to expanding more into the natural world!

I became interested in egg tempera painting 10 years ago due to it's rich history, vanishing availability and the capability for vibrant realism. With a little luck I discovered egg tempera artist Mark Thompson instructing at the Denver Art Students League and studied with him until moving to Cave Creek in August 2014. I derive great pleasure working with egg tempera and sharing the process with the public.
