Artist Statement

Landscape painting has always been my first artistic love. The Desert
Southwest offers all a painter could ask for in subject matter and color.
Arizona lands display rich reds, sun-burnt oranges, and golden yellows.
Add in the ever-changing tones of the purple shadows and you have a
colorist?s paradise! A walk down a dry desert wash or over a rocky hillside
can lead to visual surprises that just call out to be paintings. It?s always
different, never the same. Landscapes are forever changing. And that?s just
the beginning!

I am drawn to go beyond a landscape?s shapes and colors to internalize its
mood. I want to convey that feeling in my painting, so I am constantly
searching for ways to translate mood into paint. Dramatic light, a peaceful
space, some added mystery and a vastness to the depth and distance all
combine as artistic elements that I strive for and that distinguish my

Landscape Oil Painter

David Flitner obtained a degree at the University of Arizona and continued his formal training at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Still drawn to the beauty of the Southwest, he returned to Arizona to make his home and continue his studies in art and of nature's landscapes. He was a founding member of the Central Arizona Backpackers Association and backpacked in Arizona for over 15 years, deepening his appreciation and knowledge of the Arizona outback. He?s been a full-time professional artist for more than thirty years.

David is a member of the Oil Painters of America and the Arizona Plein Air Painters. He has shown in one-man and multi-artist shows and his artwork has been represented in fine galleries in Scottsdale, Sedona, Tubac, Wickenburg, Aspen, Santa Fe, Jackson Hole, Monterey and Tucson. David's work has been displayed in Phoenix city government and corporate buildings nationally and can be found in private estate collections, including that of Burt Reynolds. His work has been featured in Arizona Highways, Scottsdale Magazine, Tubac Visitor?s Guide, and SkyWest Magazine.

David is a local instructor of landscape painting classes at the Scottsdale Artists' School in Scottsdale, Arizona. David considers himself on a lifelong journey in art and readily shares his information to help others along their own art paths. He thoroughly enjoys learning about art, teaching art, and talking about art!
