Artist Statement

Most every image I create recounts a human story, even though I seldom portray actual human beings. Where possible, I post that story along with the image.

I find my images via my road travels. When I feel transported to spaces of joy or sheer awe, I pull out my camera! These places may delight me or tickle my funny bone. Sometimes they draw a tear or two. They are often little expressions of humor, good will, mystery, or just someone's declaration, "I was here."

I have an advertising background, in both art direction and copywriting. I wanted to re-create the promises of adventure and fun promoted by the mid-century billboards, print ads and corny tourist stops I loved as a child. The actual products and destinations didn't always deliver, but those ads never failed to fire my imagination, making the possibilities come alive.

Eventually, I discovered digital photography and its associated artistic tools. They became the keys to my creative castle. Now I am able to capture anything I encounter, create my own fantasies via coloration and style, and uncover the stories that my subjects had been keeping to themselves.

I have always been a bit of an exaggerator. I tend to embellish my conversations by adding just a little more color, intrigue, and meaning than the subject may actually call for. I am also an exaggerator of photo image. I do not hesitate to "enlarge" either a color or a story. It's how I see the world. To me, it's a spectacular excess of beauty, humor, sweetness and poignancy. It's what I try to communicate in my art.

I know not everybody sees or experiences things as I do. But if you feel moved to stop and feel the spirit moving within my images and stories, maybe even experience some of these destinations for yourself, I have done my job. I hope you enjoy my work, and the world that inspires it.
